Acerola is a plant native to the Amazon rainforest of South America and the Caribbean. It is a large shrub of the Malpighiaceae family that measures 5 to 15 meters in height. The flowers develop bright red stone fruits. Also called Barbados cherry, this cherry-like superfood is a true Vitamin C concentrate. It contains 1500mg per 100g, so 1 teaspoon per day is enough (65mg of vitamin C per day). They also contain anthocyanins that help fight cellular aging.
The Amazonian tribes already knew the invigorating virtues of acerola, they consumed it fresh or its juice. They used acerola to treat dysentery, diarrhea and liver problems, among others.
