Umeboshi (梅:うめ) is a fruit that comes from the Prunus nume, a tree of Chinese origin (later taken to Japan and Korea), hence it is commonly known as Chinese plum or Japanese plum, and is obtained by leaving the unripe plum to ferment for a period of a few months, although its fermentation can be extended to almost two years. For more than 3,000 years Umeboshi has been considered an effective medicine by Japanese medicine and used in macrobiotics. It helps to treat fever, combat digestive system disorders among other benefits.
