What is Gula Apong?
Gula Apong, also known as Nypa Palm Sugar, is a natural sweetener derived from the sap of the Nypa fruticans (Nipah palm). This unique palm tree thrives abundantly along the coastal areas of Sarawak. To harvest the sap, the palm flower is carefully tapped, allowing the sweet liquid to flow into bamboo containers. The sap is then boiled for 6 to 8 hours with constant stirring to evaporate the water content, leaving behind the rich, dark syrup. It takes approximately 6 liters of sap to produce just 1 kilogram of Gula Apong, making it a truly precious and high value product.
